Summary

Matt McGregor is a fully registered psychologist, with a master’s degree and specialist endorsement in sport and exercise psychology. He has over 25 years of experience working with athletes, coaches and sporting teams. His clients have included professional and amateur athletes, coaches and organizations in AFL, State and National cricket, equestrian sport, rowing, kayaking, swimming, hockey, BMX, golf, diving, volleyball, tennis, and the performing arts. 

Matt’s has held roles as the Mental Health Navigation and Network Services Lead at the AFL Players Association, after serving as senior sport psychologist at the South Australian Sports Institute for 7 years and Player Development Manager at SACA for 4 years. These roles have seen him work with high performance athletes and coaches of varying ages and developmental levels, across a range of team and individual sports. He conducts group programs and individual consultations on topics covering performance enhancement (eg. confidence, concentration, arousal/anxiety, motivation, culture and team dynamics), and personal development and wellbeing issues (eg. mental health, self-awareness, behaviour change, career development, stress management, time management, communication, and learning). Matt’s roles have also extended to providing expertise in critical incidents and consultation around organizational policy in areas such as high performance cultures, mental health and wellbeing, and transitions. Matt also maintains a number of professional and amateur clients in private practice, and has performed leadership roles as the National Secretary of the College of Sport and Exercise Psychology, a division of the Australian Psychological Society. 

Matt has also maintained strong links with academia, completing a PhD at Victoria University, teaching sport and exercise psychology to tertiary and secondary school students at Deakin University, Victoria University, UniSA, and Box Hill Senior Secondary College, conducting research, and supervising post-graduate students. He is currently an Associate Professor & Coordinator for the Master of Sport & Exercise Psychology and Doctor of Psychology (Sport and Clinical) Programs at the Institute for Social Neuroscience (ISN), where he also supervises students on advanced professional placements. 

He is also a skilled and engaging public speaker, being called on by radio and TV media for expert opinion and has presented at national and international conferences and symposia.
